Project “ANABASIS”
ANABASIS is a conceptual musical project by composer Gennady Rovner. It is a concerto for piano, string quartet, and orchestra. The recording was made at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.
The project’s name refers to Baroque musical rhetoric, where the term “anabasis” symbolized upward movement and transcendence. The work consists of four movements, each representing a distinct stage of creative ascent.
The four movements of the concerto are as follows:
- The first an exploration of musical space.
- The second a conflict‑driven development with an emphasis on the strings.
- The third the role of the string quartet as a connecting element.
- The fourth a final catharsis and upward movement.
The recording features a team of world‑class musicians:
- Vassilis Varvaressos - piano.
- James Sherman — conductor.
- London Session Orchestra - orchestra.
- Haydn Bendall - sound engineer, winner of 4 prestigious Grammy Awards.
